Our safeguarding team
Everyone who works with children and young people has a responsibility for safeguarding and acting to ensure that they receive the right support at the right time.
Safeguarding legislation and government guidance says that safeguarding means:
- Protecting children from maltreatment.
- Preventing impairment of children’s mental and/or physical health or development.
- Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
- Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcome.
- The ‘tell us‘ button is to be used if you have any concerns. This will notify members of the safeguarding team at John Smeaton Academy.

Local support for parents and families
At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues. Sleep problems can leave people feeling isolated and lonely.
The Sleep Charity free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with SEND. We can talk to young people directly, or parents (They also also talk to adults about their sleep issues).
The helpline is open 5 times a week, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.
Our Approach to safeguarding
John Smeaton Academy takes its role in safeguarding extremely seriously and our staff will do everything they can to protect students and children from harm. We acknowledge that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and all of our staff are trained to be vigilant and aware of the signs and indicators of abuse. The viewpoints and voice of students is of paramount importance to our academy and we will always listen to their wishes, thoughts and feelings, as well as identifying and supporting their needs. We will work alongside students to develop trusting, consistent and professional relationships. We advocate early help processes and, where possible, we will identify any difficulties or concerns early in order to act preventatively. We will always provide support and advice for families and parents/carers, whilst acting in the best interests of the student at all times. Safeguarding also includes ensuring we follow safe working practices and provide a secure learning environment for our students and staff.

The NHS England project manager, for the Quality Improvement Taskforce: Child and Young People Mental Health, learning development & autism (based in Leeds). The team is looking at improving children & young people’s inpatient mental health services. One of the projects the team have been working on has been to develop a number of short films, aimed at supporting parents and carers who may have concerns about their child’s mental health. The central principle is to promote awareness of support and resources that are already available, with the aim of preventing situations escalating into a crisis stage.
The team have commissioned a range of quality assured resources. In particular, there are 16 films, supported by high-profile celebrities, covering 6 different topic areas – including safety (both physical and online), eating disorders and self-harm. These are highly engaging films, which are accessible and created to provide relevant and practical support.
