Choosing the right secondary school for your child is a defining moment for any parent or carer.

Sir John Townsley
Interim Principal,
CEO, John Smeaton Academy
At John Smeaton Academy, we understand that this is an important moment in the life of any family and therefore, we aim to do our best to ensure that your child is incredibly well supported as they transition to us from primary school.
The journey to becoming a John Smeaton Academy student is a very exciting one! Your child may have already visited our academy when they were in Year 5 to take part in an engaging workshop or they may have attended our annual Open Evening which takes place in September. These opportunities will have enabled your child to get a feel for the creativity we have to offer in the classroom as well as filling them with awe and wonder about all the fantastic opportunities they will experience when they officially join us in Year 7.
Once your child has accepted their place at John Smeaton Academy, the personalised transition programme will commence. This will include:
- Regular communication from the academy
- Meetings with the parents or carers of the child and their primary school teacher
- Additional meetings with the Primary SEND Co and Child Protection Team, if required
- At least two transition days to experience all that our academy has to offer
- Parent Information Evenings
- Summer school
